Qualifying started out rough as #14 Ford, Clint Boywer was blocked in by #6 Ford Ryan Newman and was not able to qualify. NASCAR powers that be, said afterwards, with two weeks of controversy surrounding the qualifying for the teams, would change the setup so no driver has this happen again. No penalty for Newman and no sympathy for Boywer.
Jimmie Johnson, 7 time Cup Champ, won the pole for the O’Reileys Auto Parts 500. Jimmie Johnson’s Hendrick #48 Chevy was the highest spot Chevrolet scored this weekend as he muscles in fifth spot. The winner for the second time this year, after winning the Daytona 500, was Denny Hamlin in the #11 Joe Gibbs FedEx Toyota Camry. Second place went to #14 Stewart-Haas Ford Mustang Clint Boywer and his teammate Daniel Suárez in the #41 Ford. Forth place was Hamlin’s Toyota teammate Erik Jones #20 car.
Wait, what? Kyle Busch didn’t win? Well, yes he racked up more wins by capturing the checkered flag for the Xfinity series My Bariatric Solutions 300 with Chevy driver Tyler Redrick coming in second and Busch Toyota teammate Christopher Bell came in third.
In the Gander Truck series, yes, Kyle Busch won that too!! Grant Enfinger and his Ford truck won the pole but came in a strong fourth, with fellow Ford driver Johnny Sauter finishing third with Stewart Friesen Chevy wedging in the second place.
