Andy Sugilio collects three hits, extends hit streak to 10 in defeat

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – CF Andy Sugilio continued his torrid start to the second half with another three-hit night, but the St. Lucie Mets used a three-run third inning to usurp the Daytona Tortugas, 4-1, on Thursday night at First Data Field.

Daytona (7-10, 42-40) jumped out to a hot start, as C Hendrik Clementina (1-4, R, 2B) led off the top of the second with a double to left-center. 1B Bruce Yari (2-3, RBI, BB, SO) followed with a run-scoring single to left to put the Tortugas ahead, 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, St. Lucie (10-7, 42-41) grabbed the lead for good. 2B Hansel Moreno (2-3, R) singled to begin the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. Following a knock that moved the runner to third, DH Mitch Ghelfi‘s (1-3, R, RBI, BB) base-hit to left drove the infielder home to tie it up at one.

The next batter – 1B Jeremy Vásquez (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, SO) – proceeded to drive a shot into the left-centerfield gap. The left-handed slugger’s double scored both men on-base to give the Mets the advantage, 3-1.

An inning later, St. Lucie snatched another tally. With runners at first and third and one out in the fourth, LF Blake Tiberi (0-2, RBI) lofted a fly ball to center. C Nick Meyer (0-3, R) crossed on the sacrifice fly to push the Mets’ lead to three, 4-1.

RHP Joe Cavallaro (4.1 IP, H, BB, 2 SO) shined in relief for St. Lucie. The 23-year-old entered for starter RHP Kyle Wilson (4.0+ IP, 7 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) – who exited with an apparent injury – and issued just one hit over 4.1 innings to garner his third win. RHP Marcel Rentería (0.2 IP) came on in the ninth to record the final two outs, collecting his second save.

Despite hurling a quality start, LHP Wennington Romero (6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) suffered his second loss of the campaign for Daytona.

RHP Mac Sceroler (4-1, 4.47 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Tortugas in game two of the series on Friday. St. Lucie is scheduled to counter with RHP Dedniel Núñez (1-3, 4.63 ERA).
