Flyers Are 7-2 In Three Previous Appearances In Maui
MAUI, Hawai’i – The University of Dayton’s fourth appearance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational will begin with a first round game against Georgia on Monday, Nov. 25. The game between the Flyers and the Bulldogs will open the tournament and will be played at 9:30 a.m. HT/2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
The winner of the tournament’s first game will play the winner between Michigan State and Virginia Tech. The other side of the bracket will open with Kansas playing tournament host (and UD sister school) Chaminade, and BYU facing UCLA.
The tournament will continue on Nov. 26 and 27, with the championship game played at 12 noon HT/5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
The games in Maui will be played at the Lahaina Civic Center. Every game will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, and available on-line at ESPN+. All of the Dayton games will be seen on ESPN or ESPN2.
The Flyers previously played in the 2000, 2003 and 2013 Maui Invitationals. In 2000, UD placed third after upsetting No. 12 UConn and No. 6 Maryland. In 2003, the Flyers won the tournament title after knocking off Central Michigan, San Diego State and Hawai’i. The Flyers placed in third again in 2013 with victories over No. 12 Gonzaga and Cal.
The 2019 Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be the 12th consecutive exempt tournament for the Flyers.
Dayton and Georgia have met one other time, also in a holiday tournament format. The Flyers downed the Bulldogs 63-55 in the first round of the University of Dayton Invitational Tournament on Dec. 21, 1973.
UD is one of five teams in the 2019 Maui Invitational to win at least 20 games last year (Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Chaminade and Kansas are the others.).
Dayton was 21-12 in Anthony Grant’s second season as the Dayton head coach and reached the NIT. UD was third in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 13-5 record. Dayton was second in the nation as a team in field goal percentage (.504, 902-1789). That was also the best single-season FG% in school history.
The Flyers return three starters and will add five veteran redshirts in 2019-20. Included in the starters are All-Atlantic 10 performers Obi Toppin (2019 Rookie of the Year and First Team All-A-10), and junior guard Jalen Crutcher (Third Team All-A-10). Also returning are 2018-19 co-captains Trey Landers and Ryan Mikesell.
