Bobby Portis, newly crowned, SEC Player of the Year, said on Saturday that he had gotten his
wish to get another shot at the CATS in today’s SEC Final. Best to choose your words wisely, there are
consequences. Portis and the Hogs got not what they wanted, but what they deserved, as the CATS
pretty easily dispatched them 78 to 63 to give UK its 28th SEC Tournament Championship. There won’t
be anymore CATlantas for the CATS as the event is no longer scheduled to be held in Atlanta, but there
is absolutely no way that the CATS could have any bigger crowd support advantage than that in
Nashville. Bridgestone Arena could become like Rupp, as it will take a special effort to defeat the CATS
in this building with the kind of support the BBN will always bring.
The CATS came out with purpose and jumped out that an 8 – 0 lead fueled by two three pointers
by Andrew Harrison. Arkansas made a few runs in the first half, but it was clear that they were not a
physical match for the CATS in this encounter, but who in college basketball is? The Hogs managed to
tie the score three times in the first half at 12 – 12, 14 – 14, and 19 – 19, but the CATS went on a 22 to 6
run from the 10:18 mark through the end of the half to lead 41 to 25 at the break. The Hogs got the
margin to 9 points 4 times in the 2nd half, but did not seriously threaten to make the game close.
The CATS were again led by Willie Cauley-Stein posting a double-double with 15 points and 10
rebounds, leading to him being named the Most Outstanding Player. Andrew and Aaron Harrison were
also named to the all-tournament team, and were dominant with Andrew posting 15 points, going 3 for
3 from beyond the arc, and 2 assists with no turnovers, and Aaron put up 11 points, going 3 for 5 from
three land, and 6 assists and only 1 turnover. Trey Lyles put up 9 and 7, and Tyler Ulis was again a
consistent force, posting 8 points and 6 assists and only 1 turnover.
This is a special year. We are seeing history in the making and witnessing the CATS performance
in this tournament was truly unforgettable. 34 and 0, on to the Big Dance we go.
