BoilermakerWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.  – The Purdue men’s basketball team is ranked No. 24 in the preseason USA Today / Coaches poll released earlier today.
The Boilermakers garnered 110 votes to sit tied with Connecticut for 24th. Purdue is one of five Big Ten teams ranked, joining Maryland (No. 3), Michigan State (No. 13), Indiana (No. 15) and Wisconsin (No. 17). Michigan, Iowa and Ohio State are other Big Ten teams receiving votes.
It marks the first time since the final poll of the 2010-11 season that Purdue has been ranked in one of the two major polls (Associated Press; USA Today / Coaches). Purdue will play at least eight games against ranked teams, as non-conference opponents Vanderbilt (No. 20) and Butler (No. 22) are also listed in the top 25.
Purdue returns four starters from last year’s team that finished tied for third in the Big Ten and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. Preseason all-Big Ten selection A.J. Hammons highlights a talented frontcourt, while Rapheal Davis anchors a solid perimeter attack. In addition, head coach Matt Painter welcomes a highly-regarded recruiting class that will strengthen Purdue’s attack.
