End of another stage of racing in the championship with the elimination of four drivers. Looked like Team Hendrick and Chevrolet could be all but on the way out of the Monster Energy Chase with Hendrick owning 3 of the bottom 4 spots at the beginning of the race.
The Hollywood Casino 400 in Kansas went smoothly till the end with late cautions determining the race outcome. #11 Denny Hamlin punched his ticket to the next round with a win at the 1.5 mile Kansas Speedway. A matter of a couple points divided #9 Chase Elliott and #2 Brad Keselowski but late wrecks put Penske drivers Keselowski and teammate #22 Joey Logano in the hot seat for elimination. Chase Elliott in the Hendrick Chevy came in second to the Toyota winner Hamlin and with Brad K’s #2 Ford finishing position of 19th made the determining factor that Chase is in and Brad is out.
Season Champ Kyle Busch came in 3rd, also going to the final elite 8 spots to the run for the championship. #1 Kurt Busch came in 4th place while 5th place went to William Bryon but 5th place not good enough as Bryon and his #24 Chevy exited the playoffs along with his team mate #88 Alex Bowman. Clint Bowyer #14 Ford was the forth team out of the elimination . The eight remaining cars are, in order, Gibbs Toyota drivers Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, and Denny Hamlin; Ford drivers Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick; Chevy drivers Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson and then Ford driver Ryan Blaney.
Next is Martinsville which can be dangerous for the playoff drivers and they better hope anyone they may have wrecked during the year forgets about it when they beat and bang around the famous paperclip (shape of the short track).
