Youngstown State vs Louisville
November 10, 2019
KFC Yum Center
Today’s game will be the first ever between the Youngstown State Penguins(1-0) and the Louisville Cardinals(1-0). Tip off is scheduled for 2:04.
Youngstown State is coached by third  year Jerrod Calhoun, 21-44 at Youngstown State.  The Louisville Cardinals are coached by second year Chris Mack, 21-14 at Louisville.
The Cards open their home season after a big road ACC win in Miami earlier this week. With all the pyrotechnics for the opening line up I wonder if that will transfer to the court for the #5 Louisville team.  It’s a beautiful fall day outside today so the attendance  is low.
First blood was drawn by Ryan McMahon on a three ball at the top of the key.  The Cards start red hot making their first 6 shots before the under sixteen minute timeout. Coming out of the time out Youngstown State made one of two free throws, followed by another make by the Cardinals Steven Enoch.  Cardinals now 8/8 from the field.  Make that 9/9 with a chance for an old fashioned 3 point play.  Missed the plus 1 but Jordan Nwora put back keeps them perfect from the field.  At the 12:51 mark Louisville misses their first attempt from the field making first 11 shots.
At the twelve minute timeout Cardinals 24 Penguins 11.  The Cards have been very efficient on offense with 7 assists so far, but the defensive end hasn’t been as kind with five team fouls, and 6 of Youngstown States 13 points have come from layups.
Highlights of the game so far have been and Alley Oop dunk by Louisville’s Williamson and a pass that bounced off the chest of an official and kept the ball alive for Youngstown State.
At the 8:00 media time out, the Cardinals are shooting 14/20 from the field including 2/5 threes.  Youngstown State is shooting 6/18 from the field but only 1/8 behind the arc.
The Cards Williamson is getting it done on both ends of the floor with two dunks and a monster block on defense!!
At the under 4:00 timeout the score was Cards 36, Penguins 21.
At this point in the game coach Mack cant be too pleased with his teams execution on defense.  Youngstown State has had several lay ups and offensive put backs.  Seems the penguins can score at will under the basket.
With 2:13 to go in the half  the Cardinals forward Aidan Igiehon (the Irish Hulk) leaves the game with three personal fouls.
Just before halftime during a timeout they started playing highlights from the Baltimore Ravens/ Cincinnati Bengals NFL game.  The biggest crowd ovation was for their own Lamar Jackson killing it on this Sunday.
At the buzzer the Youngstown States Darius Quisenberry drained a three from the right baseline to take momentum into the locker room.
Halftime Louisville 38, Youngstown state 31. Cardinals are shooting 16-30 from the field and 3-8 from three point line.  Penguins are shooting 12-24 from the field, and 3-13 from beyond the arc.  Most telling stat of the game thus far is the rebounding.  Youngstown State has the edge 22(11 Offensive) to the Cardinals 17 (4 Offensive).
Mc Mahon again the first to score coming out of halftime. Followed by back to back Dunks by Nwora.  I think Coach Mack got their attention during the halftime break with the Cards going on a 6-0 run after intermission.
At the 14:12 time out the Cardinals are playing much harder defensively and pulling away from the quite simply over matched Penguins.  Score 53-26.
During the period between Media timeouts the Penguins out scored the Cardinals 15 to 3 to make it a 57-41 game.
Just before the 7:38 media timeout Louisville Freshman Quinn Slazinski pops a three pointer from the “Denny Crum Court” logo!!  The Cardinals have pulled it out to a twenty point spread.  Both teams are playing cleaner defense in the second half with Louisville having just 2 team fouls and the Penguins having 4.
With the 3:29 media timeout and the home team ahead by twenty the much less than capacity crowd has started to file out of the KFC Yum Center.
Final score Cards 78, Penguins 55
Final Stats

Again the two stats that standout are the rebounds Youngstown State 46 (19 offensive) Louisville 38(6 offensive). Assists Louisville 22 (6 turnovers) and Youngstown State 5 (11 turnovers)
It was a good win for the home standing #5 Cardinals with lots of bright spots for the future.  The starting five of Sutton, Nwora, Enoch, Perry and McMahon being very solid and Samuel Williamson coming off the bench and contributing 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assist.

Official attendance: 14,761
Louisville’s next game will be at home in the KFC Yum center at 8:00 on Wednesday November 13.
