For all of it’s detractors, the new RPI system appears to have worked just fine. Of the 12 teams in 6 Classes that made the Championship round, only the Belfry Pirates were outside their Classes top 4 teams according to the RPI rankings. Sports View America’s own rankings only missed out with Belfry and Trinity having correctly picking the top teams in 5 of the 6 classes and no team outside of the top 3 with the exception of Belfry and Trinity.

In 1A the RPI had Pikeville (13-0) at #2 with an RPI of .761. KY Country Day was the top RPI for 1A but lost to #4 RPI Paintsville (11-3) .694 in the Semi Finals. Sports View America had Pikeville ranked at #1 and Paintsville at #3. Paintsville fell to Pikeville earlier in the season 9-8 and looks to be a classic in the rematch for the 1A Championship.

In 2A Class, The RPI had Mayfield (13-1) ranked at #2 with a RPI of .753 followed by Somerset (13-1) at #3 with a RPI of .752. Sports View America had Somerset at #1 and Mayfield at #2. Somerset’s only loss was a 1 point road loss to Lexington Christian and Mayfield only loss came at the hands of McCracken County at home.

In Class 3A Bell County (14-0) was #1 in the RPI with .703 and was also #1 in the final Sports View America poll while Belfry (10-3) was 6th in RPI at .637 and #11 in Sports View America’s poll. Belfry was overlooked by many with two of their losses to Pikeville & Johnson Central, both teams reaching the Championship game in their class.

In Class 4A Boyle County (14-0) and #1 in RPI at .730 will tangle with Johnson Central (14-0) and # 2 in RPI at .705. Sports View America had Johnson Central at #2 and Boyle at #3 behind then #1 Franklin County. This should be an interesting matchup since neither team has been tested this year. Boyle County has outscored their opponents 710-132 this season while Johnson Central has outscored their opponents 656-135.

In Class 5A the RPI and Sports View America agreed on both #1 Covington Catholic (14-0) .704 & #2 Frederick Douglass (14-0) .681.Both teams made easy work of their schedules and look to put their high powered offenses on display for a shot at a 5A State Championship.

In Class 6A Louisville Male (14-0) was easily the top team in RPI at .716 and also the top team in Sports View America’s football poll. Trinity (12-2) was 4th in RPI at .632 and 5th in Sports View America’s poll. One of Trinity’s 2 losses was an early season matchup with Male on the road in which Trinity lost in Overtime 20-17 so they will be looking to avenge that loss.
