Louisville vs Florida State – January 4, 2020 – Louisville Kentucky

Louisville returns home for the first time this decade to take on the number 18 ranked Seminoles of Florida State. The Cards are hoping to start the new year on a more positive note than ending 2019 with an eight point lose to Kentucky at Rupp Arena.

Louisville is shaking up the starting lineup for the ACC matchup, replacing Ryan McMahon with Graduate transfer Lamarr “Fresh” Kimball. Today’s game marks the first time this season that the Cardinals will face back to back games against nationally ranked teams.

After an opening dunk by Steven Enoch, All Star Jordan Nwora got back to his old self draining a three ball from left of the key. Unfortunately that was the extent of Cardinals production five minutes and fifteen seconds. At the under 16 minute timeout Cards are still ahead 5-4. Cardinal faithful will be relieved to see the Jordan Nwora sank both of his free throws coming out of the time out!!

The highlight of the day is not the basketball game so far. At the under twelve timeout part of the “Family” day celebrations they had a race of crawling infants. Who knew that a little girl could be so motivated by a pacifier and a bag of gummies?? Too stinking cute!

At the half the real story so far is that Jordan Nwora has returned to form scoring 21 points(making 3-3 free throws). Coach Mack even went deeper in his bench today to try to find something that will work playing ten different players. Bad news is that the Florida State Seminoles are shooting 55 percent from the floor while Louisville Cardinals are shooting an ice cold 27 percent. The Louisville team finds themselves trailing the visitors by seven. But as we know from last weeks game at Kentucky that many points are not insurmountable. Going forward in the game the home team needs to set the tempo of the game and execute their offense with more discipline.

The second half so far is not for the feint of heart!! Both teams are being as physical as I’ve seen this year. The refs are definitely letting them play. But with the home team down by eight with 12:05 to go in the game can the home team mount the comeback? The Cards have gone to a zone defense to slow the inside game of Florida State.

The Florid State Seminoles prevailed over the home standing Cardinals 78 to 65. The Cards had no answer defensively for the physical players from the sunshine state. The visitors maintained their hot shooting throughout the game with 55% made baskets. It didn’t really matter what type of defense Louisville employed the Seminoles exploited it.

One glaring thing that several of us at the game thought was that when Steven Enoch got the ball down low he was effective. Also when they pass the ball to start the offense it is much more efficient.

The Cards fall to 11-3 on the season and 2-1 ACC. The Cardinals home again this Tuesday to take on the Miami Hurricanes at 7:00.
