Louisville Cardinals vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish – January 11, 2020 – Notre Dame Indiana

Louisville traveled to Note Dame to start their only three game streak of road games for the season. Today’s game marks only the fourth time the Cards have played outside the friendly confines of the KFC YUM Center. Notre Dame is coming off of a lose at NC State(68-73), while Louisville is entering the game after a home win over Miami(74-58).

Looking around the arena it seems that there is a large number of Louisville fans that made the trek up from the River City to see this Regional rivalry game. (Does anyone else miss the BIG four Classic with Louisville, Notre Dame, Indiana and Kentucky playing each other every year?)

Both teams today have some strongpoints. ND leads the country in Assist to turnover ratio 1.85. ND also leads the nation in the fewest fouls per game 11.9. Notre Dame’s John Mooney leads the nation in rebounds per game 13.6. Louisville’s Jordan Nwora leads the ACC in scoring at 20.9ppg. The Cardinals also lead the league in three point percentage at .430.

The game plan for the Cardinals so far in the game has been to work the ball inside best they can. Both teams are playing extremely good half court defense going into the first TV timeout.

Ryan McMahon has come into the game and made a huge impact!! In three minutes McMahon has tallied a rebound, a steal and four points. Both baskets on some dipsy doodle moves under the basket between the Notre Dame trees! Ryan’s hot streak then lead the team to a 14-3 scoring run over the next 5:07 to push the Louisville lead to 25-14.

Going into halftime the visiting Cardinals take 36-24 lead into the locker room. Louisvilles game plan to go inside has played out so far this half by scoring 18 of 36 points in the paint. While also getting 12 points beyond the three arc. The much maligned(social media) Ryan McMahon tops the scoring chart with All Star Jordan Nwora at 12 points each.

Notre Dame came out of the locker room smoking hot while the Cardinals seem to have stayed in the locker room. The Fighting Irish have gone on a 11-1 run in the first three plus minutes to close the cap and make it a two point game. With 6:50 to go in the game the Irish have completed the comeback to go ahead 55-53. Notre Dame has been red hot from three(7 made) land! Louisville has been unable to get anything done inside so far this half.

Jordan Nwora ties the game with a three with 2:30 to go. Now its gonna be a fight to the end of regulation. Advantage Louisville with a three, followed by a lay up by Fresh Kimball. That proves to be enough as Louisville makes five of five on their final field goals to get a road victory in a packed Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce center.

Louisville’s bench really came through tonight scoring 26 of the teams 67 points while holding Notre Dame’s bench to 16 points.

The Cardinals now travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
