After losing their opening game in the Bluegrass Showcase, the Morehead St. Eagles took the floor in Rupp Arena tonight to take on the heavily favorited Richmond Spiders. According to ESPN the Eagles only had a 9% chance of pulling out an upset, but that wasn’t going to scare Morehead who faced off against the Wildcats Wednesday night.  The game was played in a mostly empty Rupp Arena which favored the Spiders because most of the crowd would have been cheering for Kentucky’s own Morehead St. who has five players from the state of Kentucky.

The game started with both teams hot from the field hitting the first six shots of the game. Unfortunately, for the Eagles they had three early turnovers that allowed the Spiders to take a 13 to 8 lead into the first official timeout. After the timeout Morehead St. looked more disciplined on defense and took the lead 16 to 15 after creating several turnovers with a full court press.

There were several lead changes in the first half, however, Richmond ended the half with a 47 to 40 lead while shooting 68% from the field. It was an impressive first half performance by Richmond’s Nathan Cayo and Grant Golden who combined for 24 points on 11 for 12 from the field. Morehead State was led in scoring by Devon Cooper who had 12 points and also led the team in rebounds with four.

The second half began with a three pointer by Morehead state that cut the lead to four, but the Spider’s drained back-to-back threes that caused Morehead State to call a timeout. That was the closet that the Eagles came to the Spiders. Richmond had an answer for every shot that Morehead made and eventually pulled away to win the game 82 to 64.

Richmond was led in scoring by Nathan Cayo with 23 points on a perfect 10 for 10 from the field. Tyler Burton led the Spiders with 12 rebounds. Morehead St. Was led by Devon Cooper in both points and rebounds with 14 and 6 respectfully.

The Richmond Spiders will face off against the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday with a 1 pm tip. The experienced Spiders could give the young Wildcats some trouble so expect a battle.
