BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 24 Illinois volleyball team earned the season sweep of Indiana as the Illini dominated in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-11) victory in Wilkinson Hall on Friday (November 19) night.

Sophomore Raina Terry led a balanced attack with 11 kills to go along with eight digs and a team-high three service aces, with redshirt-freshman Maddie Whittington turning in eight kills on a .538 hitting percentage and junior Jessica Nunge and graduate student Megan Cooney each posting seven kills, with Cooney delivering on a .412 attack clip.

Redshirt-junior Diana Brown directed the Illini (18-10, 10-7 B1G) to a .309 team hitting percentage while handing out 32 assists, while defensively, senior Taylor Kuper registered a team-high 11 digs and Cooney contributing 10 digs in the win. The Illini outblocked the Hoosiers (9-20, 3-14 B1G), 8.0 to 2.0, with Whittington, Brown and junior Kyla Swanson each posting three stuffs on the night.

In a competitive opening set – the closest of the match with 11 ties and seven lead changes – neither team grabbed more than a two-point advantage until the Hoosiers strung together five-straight points to take an 11-7 edge. The Illini battled back with a 10-4 run to push ahead at 17-15 on a Whittington kill. After trading points over the next several rallies, the Hoosiers tied things up at 19-19 on back-to-back points. With the score still tied at 21-21, the Illini finished off the opener on a 4-1 run, with back-to-back Cooney kills sending the Illini to a 25-22 set win.

It was all Illinois to open the second as a 5-2 start turned into a 9-5 lead following three-straight points. The Hoosiers then used a 7-3 run to even the score at 13-13. After exchanging points, the Illini put together a 6-1 run of their own to take a 20-15 advantage. Indiana took three of the next four points to close within 21-18, but three-straight scores – including a Nunge ace – gave the Illini set point at 24-18. An Illini service error fought off one set point for the home team, before a Swanson kill wrapped up the second at 25-19.

The Illini their momentum into the third stanza as three-straight point to open the set turned into a 9-3 advantage following a Whittington kill. After the Hoosiers scored three of the next four points to bring them within 10-6, the Illini responded with a 4-1 run as a Nunge ace gave Illinois a 14-7 lead. IU again converted three of the next four scores to close the deficit to 15-10, but it would be as close as the Hoosiers would get as the Illini used a 10-1 run to end the match, including a 7-0 run on the Terry serve that was capped by an ace to seal the 25-11 set score and the 3-0 sweep in the match.

Illinois next returns to Huff Hall for its regular season home finale, hosting Maryland on Senior Day on Sunday (November 21) at 12 p.m. CT. The Illini will honor senior manager Michael Ryan along with Kuper, Cooney and graduate student Kylie Bruder.
