Eleven scorers highlight Clemson’s 38-point victory.
CLEMSON, S.C. – 11-7-25 Clemson University men’s basketball stormed past the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs on Friday night in Littlejohn Coliseum 97-59.
The Tigers (2-0) finished the game with eight different players making a three, eleven different scorers and 25 assists to just three turnovers in the rout.
Carter Welling (Draper, Utah/Corner Canyon/Utah Valley) served as a major catalyst in the victory, recording his first double-double of the season and fourth of his career with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Davidson (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mater Dei) led the Tigers in points with 18, while adding six rebounds and two assists.
Ace Buckner (Dallas, Texas/La Lumiere School (Ind.) reached double-figures for the second consecutive game, recording 11 points off the bench. RJ Godfrey (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett/Georgia) finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from the foul line to total 13 points and six boards.
Clemson jumped out to an early 16-3 advantage and never looked back for its second-straight wire-to-wire victory to start the season.
Gardner-Webb trailed the Tigers by as many as 20 points in the opening stanza, but were able to close the gap heading into the break with Clemson leading 45-30.
The Tigers opened the second half on a 14-2 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 38, which proved to be the final margin of victory.
Despite not finding the scoring column, Zac Foster (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) led the team in assists with five and committed zero turnovers. Foster also added five rebounds.
Clemson returns to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 11 when it hosts Morehead State at 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
Notes: Clemson improves to 2-0 on the season … the Tigers improved to 5-1 all-time against Gardner-Webb … the 38-point margin was the largest margin of victory in series history … Brownell won his 294th game at Clemson and 461st in his career … Clemson tied a school record with eight players making a 3-pointer in the contest … the Tigers 25:3 assist/turnover ratio (8.33) is the third-highest in school history dating back to 1996-97 … it is the highest for a team with at least 20 assists in a game in that span … Clemson has won its first two games by 50 and 38 points, respectively, and that is the 10th time in program history that the Tigers have won its first two games by 25 or more points … it’s the first time since 2009-10 to win the first two by 35 or more points … Carter Welling totaled his first double-double of the season and fourth of his career with 14 points and 11 rebounds … Nick Davidson netted a season-high 18 points in the contest.
