BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University’s Wendell Green Jr. has been voted the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for men’s basketball, the league announced on Monday.

Green Jr. averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists-per-game to lead Eastern to a pair of OVC victories last week.

The 5-11 guard exploded for a career-high 30 points to lead EKU to an 80-75 road win at Austin Peay on Saturday. Green Jr. was 5-of-7 from three-point range in the victory. He scored 14 straight points during a 3-minute, 22-second flurry in the first half that set the tone for the Colonels. He added five rebounds versus the Govs.

Green Jr.’s 30 points are the second most by any player in the OVC this season, and the second most by any freshman in the country.

The Detroit native also delivered a big performance in the 69-61 win over Eastern Illinois last Wednesday. He posted nine points, a career-high five steals, three assists and three rebounds.

Green Jr. now leads all OVC freshmen in assists-per-game (4.5) and steals-per-game (2.0), and he ranks second in scoring (11.8 points-per-game).

This is his first OVC Freshman of the Week honor this season.

Green Jr. and the Colonels return to action this week by hosting Jacksonville State (January 7) and Tennessee Tech (January 9) at McBrayer Arena.
