The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities bestowed the honor of World’s Greatest Racehorse on Breeders’ Cup champion Knicks Go today as he prepares to face Life is Good in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational on Saturday at Gulfstream. In fact, the awards ceremony and the draw for the showdown of the year took place within hours of one another. Knicks Go drew the rail with Reylu Gutierrez just to his outside on Chess Chief. Life is Good drew the four hole, and Twitter is buzzing about what could be a match race for the history books.

Knicks Go has won five Grade 1 races in his career including the Pegasus last year. Trained by Louisvillian Brad Cox, the multimillionaire son of Paynter comes into the Pegasus on a four-race win streak. He has ten wins in his 24 career starts and is undefeated around two turns since moving to the Cox stable. He is the morning line favorite at 6-5 with Life is Good just behind him at 7-5. Jockey Joel Rosario will retain the mount for the $3 million-dollar race and clearly has the horse to beat.

Both Knicks Go and Life is Good are coming into this race off a Breeders’ Cup victory.  And, both horses have been firing bullets in their works. The lightly raced Life is Good has five wins in his six career starts. Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, the Into Mischief colt will need to give his best effort on Saturday to defeat Knicks Go, but do not count him out. He has done little wrong so far. Irad Ortiz, Jr. has the mount and that is always a plus in my book.

Rosario and Ortiz on the hottest horses in the country? Yes, please!!! Saturday could very well be a match race that is talked about for many years to come. That is one scenario. The other possibility is that these two amazingly talented front-running superstars might go out and wear each other down, leaving a stalker or closer to pick up the pieces.  If the pace melts down up front, Stiletto Boy might be able to sit off the pace and make a run. And, a meltdown up front would definitely benefit the late-running Chess Chief and Sir Winston.

I envision scenario one…an epic match race with Knicks Go taking home the Cup for the second year in a row. But it’s horseracing…and anything is possible once those gates open! Let’s go!!!
