V V’s Dream scored an impressive 8 3/4 length victory on Saturday at Churchill Downs in the first Kentucky Oaks prep race of the 2023-24 season. Trained by veteran Ken McPeek and ridden by Brian Hernandez, Jr., the beautiful two-year old gray daughter of Mitole has two wins from three starts. Her only defeat by only half a length came in the Ellis Park Debutante on July 2nd.  She was bested by Brightwork, who is undefeated in four career starts and went on to take both the G3 Adirondack and the G1 Spinaway at Saratoga this summer.

V V’s Dream stalked the very hot pace; and, after front runners Youalmosthadme and Hot Beach had softened one another through :22 and :44 fractions, V V’s Dream took command and never looked back. She covered the mile in 1:36.45 and received an 87 Beyer. Notably, that number was almost ten points higher than West Saratoga’s winning number in the colts’ G3 Iroquois two races later. He received a 78 Beyer for his victory. The pair now top the leader board for the Kentucky Oaks and Derby.

V V’s Dream was purchased by Ken McPeek for Mike Mackin at the Keeneland September sale in 2022 for $190,000. Her earnings for three starts total $297,605.  McPeek says she will likely run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile fillies race at Santa Anita in November. This was McPeek’s fourth Pocahantas victory.

It will be interesting to see Brightwork and V V’s Dream hook up again as they have the same running style and appear to be equally talented. I suspect both will make an appearance in California in November.

The next Kentucky Oaks points races are October 6th and 7th. The Alcibiades is on the 6th at Keeneland. The Frizette and the Chandelier are on October 7th at Aqueduct and Santa Anita, respectively. So far, the fillies division is much more exciting than the colts. Girl power!!
