UK didn’t expect their season to end up like it has. Yes, they are bowl eligible again, but this year was supposed to be different. They started off 5-0 albeit it with wins against Ball State, EKU, whom they struggled to beat, Akron, at Vandy, two pick six saved their game here, and a signature win against Florida at Kroger field.

Then it was on to Georgia. That is when the wheels came off the Wildcat wagon. UK would fall to the number 1 Bulldogs 51-13. Then it was a home loss to Missouri 38-21, that was followed up with a home loss to the hated Tennessee Vols 33-27. Kentucky would travel to Mississippi State and defeat the Bulldogs 24-3. Kentucky would then take on a surging Alabama team at Kroger Field and get dominated 49-21. UK would travel to South Carolina hoping to build some momentum but left their offense on the bus as the Gamecocks would win 17-14.

This would bring us to the Governors Cup against in state rival and 10th ranked Louisville Cardinals.
UK would take the opening kick off to start their drive. It started off good enough with a couple of runs by Davis. The Louisville ratcheted up the defense and hit Ray Davis with a 4 yard loss. After a Leary incomplete pass, Louisville would sack Leary for a 9 yard loss, forcing the Cats to punt.

On the ensuing drive, Louisville would march down the field on a 14 play, 8:27 70 yard touchdown drive culminating in a Jawhar Jordan 1 yard touchdown for Louisville. After the PAT the Cards lead 7-0.

Starting the 2nd quarter, both teams offenses stalled out an had to punt. Kentucky would then get the ball and drive down the field where Devin Leary passed to Dane Key for 9 yard touchdown (Alex Raynor made PAT). This was a 9 play 52 yard 5:19 drive.

Louisville didn’t waste anytime getting points as they would drive down to kick a field goal giving them a 10-7 Halftime lead.

The third quarter was definitely an exciting one as both teams scored twice with the highlight being UK running a kickoff return for a touchdown by Brown. At the end of three quarters Kentucky trailed #10 Louisville 24-21.

The 4th quarter saw UK’s J.J. Weaver take over the game with 2 fumble recoveries, one that resulted in a Ray Davis touchdown reception giving UK a 31-24 lead. Louisville next drive ended with UK’s defense holding Louisville on a 4th down stop and possession change with 6 minutes to go in the game. Louisville would ramp up their pressure which forced UK QB Devin Leary into a costly interception. Louisville would drive down the field for a score to tie the game at 31.

UK would shake off the Interception and score on a big run by RB Ray Davis with 1:02 to go in the game taking a 38-31 lead on their way to a monumental upset over a top 10 ranked Louisville Cardinals. Louisville had one last try but fell short as time expired. Louisville would throw an interception and the Cardinals would fall to Kentucky for the 5th straight year.

UK would enter the bowl season at 7-5 while Louisville will face Florida State in the ACC Championship.
