By Graham Shepherd – Rupp Arena, Lexington, KY

The ‘Cats defeated Western Kentucky by a score of 87-68 in a Tuesday night matchup in Rupp Arena. It was a well fought battle between the two teams, as Western Kentucky held it owns against the ‘Cats for the majority of the game. The Kentucky lead was as low as 6 points in the second half, but the Kentucky veterans carried the ‘Cats to the finish line. Otega Oweh and Andrew Carr led the offense in scoring with 18 points each. Lamont Butler added 14 points, with 8 points coming from the free-throw line. Shooting was hard to come by for both teams as the ‘Cats shot just 40% from the field and 28% (8 of 29) from the three point line, while Western Kentucky shot 32% and 15% (4 of 26) from beyond the arc. The Kentucky defense proved to be the difference in this game, but the ‘Cats struggled from the charity stripe down the stretch, shooting just 69% (29 of 42). Cleaning up their free-throw shooting and adjusting the offense on a nights where they aren’t hitting their shots will be essential heading into December. It was the first home game this year that didn’t see the ‘Cats coast through the game for a huge win, and will be beneficial for the team as they head into a more difficult stretch of the schedule in the coming weeks. Kentucky looks to keep their winning ways intact this Friday against Georgia State.

Pre-Game Thoughts:

Kentucky entered Tuesdays matchup against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers with a 5-0 record. It was the final game of the BBN Invitational series that included the ‘Cats, Western Kentucky, Lipscomb and Jackson State. Both Kentucky and Western Kentucky went 2-0 in their games against Lipscomb and Jackson State over the last week. The ‘Cats continue to play team centered basketball as they came into their game against the Hilltoppers, with four players averaging double figures, and seven players averaging 6.8 PPG or more. The ‘Cats are keen to sharing the ball at every opportunity they have, as they lead the nation with 21.8 assist per game. The potent offensive attack is currently averaging 97 PPG, good for 3rd in the nation. The Kentucky offense is led by Otega Oweh (16.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.6 APG) and Koby Brea (16.0 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 1.4 APG, 74% from 3PT), who comes off the bench. In the latest AP Top 25 poll, the ‘Cats moved up one spot to No. 8 in the country. The Hilltoppers entered the game with a 3-2 record, with their two losses coming in the first two games of the season against Wichita State and Grand Canyon. The Western Kentucky team also has four players averaging double figures in scoring and are led by Senior Guard Don McHenry (17.2 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.8 APG). The team features a slew of seniors outside of Freshman Guard Julius Thedford (11.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 55% from 3PT). The ‘Cats look to continue their string of exciting basketball before Thanksgiving weekend.
