The Blue-White festivities started off with the Kentucky Women’s Basketball team. The team participated in drills and warmed up before taking the court for a 10-minute scrimmage against the men’s practice squat for the Women’s basketball team. The men’s practice squad acts to simulate opposing teams and challenge the players during practice. The first half ended with the Kentucky Women’s team leading the Men’s practice squad by a score of 22-17. Stand out moments from the half included athletic fade-away jumpers from Strack and three-point field goals from newcomers Carroll and Gilvin. In the second half Carroll added in another three to give her 8-points in the scrimmage. The Women’s team went on to defeat the Men’s practice squad 43-32.

Up next was the Kentucky Men’s Basketball Blue-White festivities. Pope explained the team would play two 10-minute quarters with room for flexibility. The blue team began with a lineup of Noah, Oweh, Aberdeen, Moreno, and Johnson. The white team began with Garrison, Williams, Lowe, Chandler and Dioubate. Garrison won the tip for the white team but Williams turned the ball over on the first possession. Oweh missed the first shot attempt of the game. Lowe cut to the basket and was fouled on a short attempt. Noah nailed his first three of the game following Lowe’s two free-throws. Moreno cleaned up a Johnson miss for a putback to push the blue lead to 5-2. Garrison backed Moreno down for a hook shot score. Johnson followed his own miss for a score for blue. Johnson blocked a Williams three and ran down the floor for a fast break three. Aberdeen drove to the bucket in transition and was fouled. Aberdeen nailed both for a 12-4 blue team lead. Potter cut to the basket and Lowe found him for a slam. Hawthorne cut and found Potter again for a score. Blue led white 12-8 with 5-minutes left in the quarter. Lowe nailed a mid-range jumper. Jelavic responded with a deep three for blue. Oweh found a cutting Moreno for a dunk after a quick transition up the court. Lowe hit a deep three to bring the score to 17-13 blue team. Jelavic banked in another three for the blue team. Johnson no-look passed to Moreno who found Noah open in the corner for a three. Aberdeen stole the pass from white and soured for a transition dunk to bring the score to 25-13 blue team. Chandler was fouled on a take to the basket following his own three-point miss. Chandler hit 1 of 2 free-throws at the line. Oweh was fouled and went to the line to make 1 of 2. The blue team led the white team 26-14 at the end of the first quarter. Coach Pope took the microphone and announced that this portion of the scrimmage would finish with an Elam ending. The Elam ending allows either team to win the game with the goal being the first to score 34-points (8 points more than the leading team at the end of the quarter). Dioubate hit 1 of 2 free-throws at the line. The white team held strong on defense and Lowe took it to the rim for a score. Johnson powered through Williams for a bucket. Jelavic blocked Potters shot and Oweh took it the distance for an athletic finish at the rim to make the score 30-17 blue team. Lowe went down with a shoulder injury. He left the game and walked to the locker room with the trainer. Moreno saved a loose ball and Johnson nailed a three to make the score 33-18 blue. Dioubate drove and dunked through traffic for the white team. Williams found Garrison on the in-bound play and Garrison made the shot and was fouled. He missed the free throw. Dioubate gathered a miss and scored. White stole the pass once again and Dioubate scored once more to narrow the blue lead to 33-26 with a target score of 34. Aberdeen found a cutting Jelavic to end the scrimmage with a score of 35-26 blue team.
The question at hand following the scrimmage will be the health of Guard Jaland Lowe. He injured his right shoulder on a loose ball play close to the end of the scrimmage. It appeared he was unable to move his arm briefly before the training staff came to assist. The worry for Lowe would primarily be a labrum injury that would potentially sideline him indefinitely as he recovers. However, we will learn more from Coach Pope and the staff in the coming days on Lowe’s availability in the short-term. Overall, it was a fun night for ‘Cats fans at Historical Memorial Coliseum. Both the Women’s and Men’s teams have potential to make a splash in the national and conference spotlight.
