MELBOURNE – Florida Tech softball welcomed the Lions to Nancy Bottge Field for the second part of the season series. The women pushed the Lions but sadly dropped both games, 6-2 and 12-5.

Mikayla Wessel (6-9) and Cheyenne Nelson (5-8) lead the Panthers at the plate as they combined for 11 hits in 17 plate appearances. Nelson also had a perfect game one as she went 5-5 with one run, while Wessel was the only Panther that had multiple runs with three.

The first few innings of game one were a pitcher’s duel as both teams worked through jams, and this kept it scoreless until the bottom of the third when Tech broke through with two runs. Wessel opened the scoring as she doubled into right-center field, which got Nelson home from second base. A few batters later, Ashley Campbell made it a 2-0 game as she hit a single into left field, and this pushed Wessel over the plate.

In the Lions’ next plate appearance, they halved the lead and made it 2-1 as the game went into the bottom of the fourth. Saint Leo doubled up their run total and tied it at 2-2 in the top of the fifth courtesy of a double.

The 2-2 scoreline held until the game hit extra innings when an unfortunate play for Tech allowed four Lion runners across the plate in the top of the 9th. The Crimson & Gray attempted to rally but it was not enough as the team fell 6-2 in game one.

The second game of the day saw the Panthers start fast as they scored in the bottom of the first. The run came off a Victoria Szrom slow grounder to the shortstop that gave Wessel enough time to easily cross the plate and make it 1-0.

Tech doubled its lead in the bottom of the third when Szrom sent one through the middle and it was deep enough that it scored Wessel from second. The 2-0 score lasted until the next Tech plate appearance as they loaded the bases with no outs and Allison Platon got an RBI as she reached first on balls. Nelson brought home the next run as she hit into a 4-3 ground out that gave Whitney Ellis plenty of time to score.

Wessel singled in the next at-bat and that got Ashlynn Shelley home and made the game 5-0. Saint Leo scored their first run of the contest in the top of the sixth off a double steal and this brought the Panthers lead down to four runs. It then became a three-run game a couple of batters later when a Lions single scored a runner from second base.

Saint Leo tallied eight more runs in the top of the sixth and took their first lead of game two, 10-5. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the seventh and made it a 12-5 contest with only three outs for the Panthers.

Florida Tech will get a few days off before they host a single-game showdown against Rollins on Thursday, April 22. First pitch for this Sunshine State Conference game is 4 p.m. ET at Nancy Bottge Field.
