Kentucky fans were excited and hoped for the upset of the ages by beating the #1 ranked juggernaut Georgia Bulldogs. Unfortunately for them, it simply wasn’t to be. The point spread for the game, depending on who you believed, was -22.5 in favor of Georgia. Had it not been for a last minute UK score, that point spread was dead on. Georgia would win 30 – 13. Most sports prognosticators felt the same way with Georgia winning easily.
The game started with a fairly positive start as UK ran the ball 6 time for 16 yards before having to punt. 2.6 yards a carry doesn’t seem like much but it established a ground game.
Things looked even better on defense as UK forced a Georgia punt after allowing 22 yards and one first down. The first quarter would be a defensive struggle for both teams and end in a 0-0 score. UK had 25 yards rushing and 20 yards passing while holding Georgia to 18 yards rushing and 57 yards passing. UK’s passing attack was determined to use the short game as QB Will Levis hit on 4 of 5 passes for 20 yards.
The second quarter looked like it was going to be the makings of a Georgia blowout as the Dogs scored twice for a 14-0 lead while UK’s offense looked to be stalling out. That was until Kentucky had a 5 plays, 80 yard drive, that culminated in a Will Levis 1 yard touchdown pass to TE Riggs. The drive took just 2:11. The Cats would go in to halftime trailing 14-7 and had to like their 2nd half chances.
Halftime stats had UK with 38 yards rushing and 77 yards passing. Will Levis continued to complete shot range passes making 14-16 for 77 yards at the half. Georgia on the other hand ran the ball for 110 yards and passed for 76 yards.
Georgia would tack on 10 more points in the 3rd Quarter while moving the ball fairly easy and UK decided to go predominantly with the short air attack. Kentucky ran the ball 3 times for 2 yards and passed for 46 yards. Georgia did just the opposite from their first half performance while running the ball for 18 yards and passed for 130 yards.
The 4th Quarter saw Georgia score quickly for a 30-7 lead before UK used a 22 plays, 75 yard drive taking up an incredible 11:23. The Cats would score to make it 30-13. The short passing game that Kentucky used the entire game finally paid off as Will Levis hit on 13-15 passes for 69 yards. UK did run the ball for 11 yards, giving them a total of 13 yards rushing in the 2nd half. Georgia ran for 36 yards and passed for 44, almost all on their opening 4th quarter scoring drive.
For the game, Will Levis passed for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 32 of 42 passes, including one-yard touchdown strikes to Justin Rigg and Wan’Dale Robinson in the game. The run game put up 51 yards, 13 in second half will need to get back on track after next weeks bye week. Kentucky did manage 243 total yards against the Nation’s top defense. Georgia rolled up 416 yards in total offense.
UK still has the chance for a memorable season if they can win their final 5 games. Kentucky can finish 11-1 and have a serious chance at a New years Bowl Game. Kentucky is already Bowl eligible and can now concentrate on fine tuning their game and cleaning up a few things to get them ready for “New Years Day”.
