Lexington, KY 1-8-22

The Kentucky Wildcats and the Georgia Bulldogs faced off at Rupp Arena earlier tonight in their first matchup since Sahvir Wheeler transferred from UGA to UK. Sadly, the reunion would have to wait with Wheeler being absent due to an injury in the previous game against LSU. With TyTy Washington starting at the point guard position, the Cats were able to beat the Dawgs 92 to 77.

It was a slow start for the Wildcats missing 5 of their first 6 shots, which gave the Bulldogs a 7 to 2 lead. The Cats were not able to pull away from the Dawgs and were tied at the under 8-minute TV timeout. The game stayed close throughout the first half due to the lack of defense from both teams. However, back-to-back baskets at the end of the half gave Kentucky a three-point lead 40-37.

Oscar Tshiebwe led both teams in points and rebounds in the first half, scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tyty Washington had a good first half playing in Sahvir Wheeler’s role gaining 6 assists with only one turnover.

Kentucky played with much more effort to start the second half and stretched the lead to nine points in the first four minutes and a 6-0 run propelled the for good midway through the second half. The final score was 92-77 giving the Cats their second conference win of the season.

It was a record-breaking night for TyTy Washington passing for 17 assist surpassing John Wall for the UK record. He also scored 17 points and only had 2 turnovers. It is safe to say that he did his job filling in for Sahvir Wheeler.

Oscar Tshiebew had another incredible night leading both teams with 29 points and 17 rebounds. On a night that Kellan Grady wasn’t shooting as well as usual, Davion Mintz stepped up scoring 19 points whilst shooting 5 for 7 from behind the arc.

Except for the slow start, the game was an excellent win for the Wildcats and they did it without their starting point guard. The Cats make the trip to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt on  January 11th. The game will be televised on ESPN with a 7pm tip.
