JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Eastern Kentucky University’s baseball team completed a 3-game sweep of Jacksonville State University with a 10-5 win on Sunday. The Colonels have won eight straight games and at 21-8 have now matched their win total for all of last season.
EKU (21-8, 8-1 ASUN) scored 10 or more runs in all three games, outscoring the Gamecocks 33-11 in the series. The Colonels have won six straight weekend series including back-to-back weekend ASUN Conference sweeps of Bellarmine and JSU, who came into this series 6-0 in league games. Eastern Kentucky is now 18-3 in its last 21 games.
For the third game in a row, a different Colonel had a big game offensively. Third baseman Conner Davis went 3-for-6 with a grand slam, six total RBIs and two runs scored. In the series opener on Friday, Logan Thomason hit a grand slam and drove in five runs. On Saturday, Kendal Ewell had a 3-run home run, finishing with three hits and four RBIs.
Charlie Ludwick got the offense going on Sunday with a solo home run to lead-off the top of the second inning. After a single by Davis, and a balk, Roderick Criss II drove him home with a single to right. Later in the inning, with two outs, Ewell drove in a pair with a single to center, giving the visitors an early 4-0 lead.
Jacksonville State (12-14, 6-3) scored in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch. Davis then broke it open in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the sophomore transfer from Northeast Mississippi Community College sent a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left center.
An inning later, after the Gamecocks plated three to cut the deficit to 8-4, Davis drove in two more with a double.
Ewell had another strong game, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Thomason was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Niko Leontarakis improved to 4-0 on the season. He allowed four runs on four hits over five innings. The senior walked four and struck out a season-best eight batters.
Four EKU pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts in the game.
Alex Carignan drove in three runs for JSU while going 1-for-5 at the plate.
The Colonels are scheduled to play at Dayton on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
