MOREHEAD, KY —The Morehead State women’s basketball team got a 33-point performance from the bench, but fell 79-62 to the Eastern Illinois Panthers at home Saturday.
The Eagles had two players score in double figures, led by Sophie Benharouga, who had 13 points. Veronica Charles added 13 points, four assists and two steals and Crystal Corley added eight points and two steals.
Morehead State shared the ball well in Saturday’s game, racking up 17 assists on 24 made field goals. Individually, Sandra Lin led the way for the Eagles with eight assists.
Morehead State forced 20 Eastern Illinois turnovers while committing 16 themselves in Saturday’s game. The Eagles turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Corley’s two steals led the way for Morehead State.
The Eagles return to the court next Thursday at Tennessee Tech, with tip-off slated for 6:30 PM ET.
How It Happened
After falling behind 20-13, Morehead State went on a 5-0 run with 1:19 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Benharouga, to narrow its deficit to 20-18. Eastern Illinois answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Eagles down 23-18 entering the second quarter.
The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-30 halftime deficit.
Morehead State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Eagles faced a 62-45 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Morehead State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
Eastern Illinois kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 76-53 advantage before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 76-59 with 2:09 to go in the contest. The Eagles were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 79-62. Morehead State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
